Stochastic modeling and image analysis in biology and medicine
In cooperation with medical scientists and biologists, in various projects microscopic image data is analyzed statistically and modeled using methods from stochastic geometry. One of these projects is integrated into the collaborative research centre "inflammation, regeneration and transformation in the pancreas" of the german research foundation (DFG), and focuses on the statistical analysis of keratin-networks in pancreatic cancer cells. The configuration of these networks is closely connected to the motility of tumor cells in tissues and thus to metastasis. One of the topics for a thesis, which are currently of interest, is the following:
- Implementation of statistial methods to analyze 3D microscopic data of protein networks in pancreatic cancer cells
If you are interested, please contact
Prof. Schmidt or
Sebastian Lück.
In another project, vascular systems of genetically manipulated mice will be analyzed. Here, the following topic for a thesis is available:
- Segmentation and analysis of microscopy images of vascular systems of genetically manipulated mice: Image processing and statistical analysis of microscopy images, especially comparison to the control group and the fitting of stochastic models to the data (random tessellations).

Prof. Schmidt.
