The ULMTeC Core Facility Cytometry at the Faculty of Medicine offers high-speed cell sorting from single-cell suspensions. Four high-speed cell sorting systems (BD FACS Aria II/III) are available for this purpose. In addition, independent use of a flow cytometer (BD FACSymphony A1) for cell analysis is possible. The prerequisite for this is a successful completion of our training. In addition, the Core Facility Cytometry has a Helios mass cytometer (a CyTOF system, Standard BioTools). This modern technology allows the detection of over 40 parameters at the single-cell level, making it an effective method for generating multiparameter data for cell analysis. For analysing the flow cytometry data, all members of the university and the university hospital have access to analysis software: Flow Cytometry Analyse software Flowlogic.

Cell sorting
The selection or isolation of specific cell populations or other structures, such as cell nuclei, is an essential component for in-depth biological analyses. The Core Facility has four FACSAria II / III cell sorters from BD at its disposal for this purpose. These instruments are fitted with specialized equipment that is used depending on the application requirements.
Our team has many years of experience in handling a wide variety of cells and performs all sorting procedures in close cooperation with the user to guarantee a successful cell sorting.

Cell analysis (BD FACSymphony™ A1)
The detection of structures on and within cells or other organic allows them to be characterized in detail. A flow cytometer is available to all researchers at Ulm University and Ulm University Hospital for the analysis of biological structures. The core facility team offers hands-on training on Core's own flow cytometer (DIVA Software 9.02). After successfully completing the training, the flow cytometer can be used independently. The training serves as an introduction to the use of flow cytometers and can therefore also be completed if the use of a similar instrument outside the Core is planned.

Mass cytometry (Helios a CyTOF system)
Mass cytometry is a technology that is only a few years old and allows the detection of a variety of parameters on a single cell. Parameters on the surface (receptors, CD markers), intracellular markers (cytokines, signal transduction proteins) or intranuclear markers (transcription factors) can be analyzed, and information on apoptosis or cell division can also be obtained as well using this technique.
For a successful CyTOF measurement, we guide users throughout the entire set-up process, from sample preparation to data processing for any custom multiparameter data analysis.
