Ulm University offers a comprehensive and diversified internal staff development programme for employees who want to advance their skills or careers. This includes a variety of workshops, seminars and one-day training sessions on different topics related to work practice, but also on matters of leadership and staff training. The offers aim to strengthen professional as well as personal competences, not least to promote individual careers in-house.

After all these years, there are still new challenges making sure that no two days are the same. When I started my professional career at Ulm University thirty years ago, I never thought I would become the head of a division.

Petra Kirsinger, Head of Division IV/Finances

In 1992, Petra Kirsinger started in an administrative position in Division IV/Finances. Five years later, she was appointed Head of Department IV-1 Finance and Financial Controlling. Since 2015, she has been responsible for the entire financial sphere of Ulm University as Head of Division IV/Finances.

Employees at Ulm University also benefit from numerous continuing education and qualification offers from other providers.

VWA / Leadership academy BW

The Württembergische Verwaltungs- und Wirtschafts-Akademie e.V. (VWA) is an important partner, providing training and continuing education for working professionals and those in leadership roles in the public service sector and economy. For those who are new to the higher service in public administration, we offer leadership courses on behalf of the State of Baden-Württemberg.

SAPS / ZWM

The School of Advanced Professional Studies (SAPS) at Ulm University also offers a comprehensive range of continuing academic education for working professionals. Members of Ulm University can furthermore take advantage of external training and educational services offered by the Zentrum für Wissenschaftsmanagement e.V. (ZWM) in Speyer. Their study and continuing education programmes are specifically tailored to employees in the higher education and science sector.

As master gardener I bear more responsibility - also for my team of gardeners - but I can actively co-shape and plan the work processes.

Markus Wespel, Master Gardener

In 2015, Markus Wespel started to work as a gardener at the Botanical Garden of Ulm University. In 2020, he attended a further education college to become a master gardener, for which the University gave him leave of absence. He is now responsible for 28 hectares of garden, park and land and supervises a team of 7 gardeners.

Erasmus+ and staff mobility

Do you want to gain experience abroad, establish international contacts and get to know different approaches in your field of work? The Erasmus+ programme not only supports students and teachers for stays abroad. Administrative staff and other employees can also receive funding for training under Erasmus+, usually for a period of 1 to 2 weeks.

Different options are available: One way is to participate in a Staff Training Week at a partner university with a fixed programme. The working language is English. A second option is individually organised Job Shadowing, where you shadow colleagues at the partner university in your field of activity, e.g. in administrative units, library facilities or IT departments.

It is incredibly interesting to explore the solutions other cultures have found for similar problems. This creates an extremely valuable new perspective on one's own culture and work world, which allows you to see new creative solutions.

The media designer at Ulm University's Communication and Information Centre visited a private university in Istanbul as part of Erasmus+ and worked there in the field of media engineering.

Leadership comes with responsibility, which is not always easy to live up to. HR Services are here to assist you in successfully shaping your leadership role. We help you resolve work conflicts and offer support in developing and managing your team. We also provide assistance with staff selection procedures and advice with regard to balancing work and family.

For civil servants who would like to advance their careers, we also offer advancement courses for the higher intermediate and higher civil service.

I was able to develop personally and strengthen my leadership personality. A special coaching offer for professors helped me in particular.

Prof. Dr. Annika Herwig, Professor

Prof. Herwig has been working at the Institute of Neurobiology at Ulm University since 2017. Prior to that, she had led a junior research group at the University of Hamburg. She is particularly interested in researching the mechanisms of seasonal adaptations in small mammals.
