Credit Point Systems - A First Analysis

Wolfgang Gehring, Universität Ulm

Hardly any other topic has influenced the German and European Area of Higher Education as much as the Bologna Process has - and it will continue to do so. Included in the process is, through the participation of now 40 countries, almost all of Europe, which will continue to grow closer together through the creation of the European Cooperation Area. As the title of the presented work Credit Point Systems - A First Analysis already suggests, the topic at hand are Credit Point Systems, one of the main points in the Bologna Declaration.

For the first time in Germany, a summative evaluation study was done, whose participants were students, research assisstants and professors; the goal of the study was to find out if credit point systems can contribute to achieve the envisaged improvements in higher education. By means of a multitude of questions we try to examine if some of the positive aspects of credit point systems can already be seen, and also if possibly negative side effects have occured. The publication Credit Point Systems - A First Analysis is only available in German so far.
