Dagstuhl Seminar 16361 on SDN Security

Ulm University

Frank Kargl was one of the co-organizers of the Dagstuhl Seminar 16361 on the security of Software-defined Networking. Entitled "Network Attack Detection and Defense - Security Challenges and Opportunities of Software-Defined Networking", the seminar brought together over 40 of world's leading researchers in network security and SDN.

The days from 4th to 9th of September where filled with extensive discussions on my SDN may actually be very challenging to secure as the complexity of network and network state may be higher. Beyond, current development of SDN is often neglecting security in many crucial ways, e.g. on the north-bound interface of the SDN controller.

At the same time, we also identified many highly fascinating and novel ideas how SDN creates new opportunities to design and implement previously unknown security mechanisms. Based on the seminar, we are currently preparing a number of summary reports.
