Issues in Emerging Market Finance

General Remarks

The course will be delivered in a blocked format over six weeks with up to three sessions per week, in the period from May 18 to June 26, 2026. 

Lecture times: Wed 8:00-10:00 in HeHo 22 E.04 & Fri 12:00-16:00 in HeHo 22 E.03.

Characterizing the course

The course will have two distinct components. The first component will focus on financial markets, i.e. how emerging markets are similar to each other and different from the developed markets. The second part addresses the specific challenges encountered by emerging markets.

The main topics to be covered are:

  • Are emerging markets a different equity class?
  • Growth drivers in emerging markets
  • Understanding the four majors BRIC
  • Other emerging markets
  • Understanding financial crises in emerging markets
  • Formal versus informal finance in emerging markets
  • Understanding micro finance institutions
  • Issues in risk management

The classes will involve lectures, discussions and exercises.
