Professor Dr. Rainer Martin 1933-2022

Rainer Martin leitete die Sektion Elektronenmikroskopie von 1975 bis 1998

Zuvor arbeitete er 13 Jahre am Meeresbiologisches Institut in Neapel (“Stazione Zoologica di Napoli”) als Stipendiat, Assistent, Abteilungsleiter und kurze Zeit als Stellvertretender Direktor.

1975 erhielt er einen Ruf von der Universität Ulm. Er baute die Sektion Elektronenmikroskopie von Null an auf, dies umfasste:
-Einstellung von 6 Mitarbeitenden und Kauf und Inbetriebnahme von fünf Elektronenmikroskopen.
-Aufbau der sehr komplexen Probenpräparation mit unzähligen technischen Geräten.
-Aufbau der Servicestruktur Elektronenmikroskopie, wie wir sie heute noch betreiben: Die Proben werden von Technikern präpariert, aber, was eher ungewöhnlich ist, von den Kunden (meist Doktorierende oder auch Studierende während Diplom, Bachelor oder Masterarbeiten) nach unserer Anleitung selbst an den Elektronenmikroskopen ausgewertet.

Rainer Martin hielt die Vorlesung Zellbiologie (heute Zellbiologie II) und führte sehr erfolgreich Praktika und Seminare durch.

1998 Pensionierung aber weiterhin tätig in der Zentralen Einrichtung Elektronenmikroskopie. Rainer Martin beschäftigte sich nach seiner Pensionierung mit Meeresschnecken, die Grünalgen fressen und dabei die Chloroplasten der Grünalgen in ihre Haut einbauen, quasi als biologische Solarzellen zur Energiegewinnung.
 
Rainer Martin verstarb am 21. September 2022 in Ulm.
