Ermenonville is a city 45 kilometers North-East of Paris, in the Oise département of France. Ermenonville is known for its park. The Jean-Jacques Rousseau park, created by the marquis de Girardin, is regarded as the first landscape garden in France. It owes its name to the French philosopher who spent the last six weeks of his life here. He passed away in 1778 and was buried in the park, on the Island of Poplars. His original tomb, which can still be seen, became a cenotaph in 1794 when his remains were transferred to the Pantheon in Paris. The tomb has the inscription 'Here lies the man of Nature and of Truth'. There is also a Temple of Philosophy, left unfinished to symbolize the incompleteness of human knowledge.

From Paris: take A1 highway, direction Lille. Leave highway at exit #8, direction Senlis. At the roundabout, follow direction Ermenonville. Cross the forest of Ermenonville and then turn left. The castle of Ermenonville is on your left, at the level of the paved road.
From Reims/Soissons: Take national road #2, direction Paris. Exit at Plessis-Belleville. At the roundabout, follow direction Ermenonville. Cross the village by going downhill. The castle is on your right, at the level of the paved road.
From the exposition parc of Villepinte: Take national road #2, direction Soissons. Exit at Plessis-Belleville. At the roundabout, follow direction Ermenonville. Cross the village by going downhill. The castle is on your right, at the level of the paved road.
From Chantilly: Follow direction Senlis then direction Crépy en Valois and at the roundabout on the right, direction Ermenonville. The castle of Ermenonville is at the entrance of the village, on your left.
Coming by train:
The nearest railway station is Plessis-Belleville (6 km from Ermenonville) on line K of the Transilien railway (Transilien map here). Take a taxi (book it in advance at the Castle of Ermenonville) from Plessis-Belleville railway station to Ermenonville (Rate: approx 20.- €).
