Unusual forms of condensed matter Crystals of repulsively interacting ions in external potentials form Wigner lattices, which undergo instabilities when the depth of the external potential is reduced. In this talk I will discuss these structural instabilities and highlight analogies with and differences from well-known condensed-matter models.
