Admission to the Degree Programs

Admission to the part-time master’s programs organized by the School of Advanced Professional Studies (SAPS) is handled by Division II of Ulm University. The only exception is the Master’s program in Biopharmaceutical and Medical Engineering Sciences, for which the admission process is conducted at Biberach University of Applied Sciences.

Modules from the study programs that have already been successfully completed at SAPS, for example as certificate courses prior to admission, will be recognized for the program. An application for recognition must be submitted within the first semester after enrollment. The master’s thesis can only be undertaken by enrolled students.

The admission requirements for each program are specified in the respective admission statutes.

The final admission score ranges between 0 and 5 points, based on: (a) the final grade of the first degree, (b) the academic relevance of the first degree, and (c) qualified professional experience and additional qualifications. A motivation letter can increase the individual score by up to 0.3 points; its absence does not lead to a deduction.
Points for the motivation letter can be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Personally written
  • Clear presentation of motivation/interest in the program
  • Clear career goals related to the program
  • Statement of expectations for personal and professional development

After enrolling in a part-time continuing education program, you may decide each semester how many modules (one, two, three or more) you wish to take. To select your modules, you will receive a form after enrollment or at the beginning of each semester, where you indicate the number of modules and your priorities.

Access Requirements for Individual Modules

In accordance with §31 (3) sentence 5 of the State Higher Education Act (LHG), Ulm University defines the access requirements for continuing education modules. Admission to individual certificate courses is based on the terms and conditions of the Center for Professional Continuing Education (School of Advanced Professional Studies, SAPS) at Ulm University and Ulm University of Applied Sciences.

Applicants for the certificate courses of the Actuarial Science program must hold a first university degree (e.g. Bachelor, Diploma, State Examination) in Business Mathematics, Mathematics, or another mathematically oriented program, or an equivalent qualification.

Applicants for the certificate courses of the Artificial Intelligence for Connected Industries program must hold a first university degree (e.g. Bachelor, Diploma, State Examination) in a technical field.

Applicants for the certificate courses of the Business Analytics program must hold a first university degree (e.g. Bachelor, Diploma, State Examination) in Business Administration, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Business Mathematics, or a comparable field, or an equivalent qualification.

Applicants for the certificate courses of the Instructional Design program must hold a first university degree (e.g. Bachelor, Diploma, State Examination). The program is intended for individuals involved in creating effective learning experiences, such as professionals in the education sector. It is particularly relevant for developers of online and blended learning formats from interdisciplinary fields such as Psychology, Education, Educational Science, Computer Science/Media Informatics, and Media Design.

Applicants for the certificate courses of the Sensor Systems Engineering program must hold a first university degree (e.g. Bachelor, Diploma, State Examination) in a technical field.

If applicants are equally qualified, registrations for certificate courses are processed in the order in which they are received by the SAPS office. The relevant date is when all required documents have been submitted in full.

Successfully completing individual certificate courses does not guarantee admission to the degree program. However, it improves the chances of admission, as successful completion of a module demonstrates subject-related aptitude, which is considered in the admission process.
