Research in the Weitzel group is currently focused on experimental and theoretical studies adding to the fundamental understanding of solid state electrochemistry. This involves e.g. measuring electronic and ionic work function of battery electrode materials as a basis for a thermodynamic description. It also involves new concepts for quantifying mixed ionic electronic conduction (MIEC).

Several projects focus on the transport of ions and/or electrons in solid-state materials in particular in glasses, crystals, poly-crystalline materials and boundary-dominated materials. A unique selling point of the Weitzel group is the charge attachment induced transport (CAIT) combined with secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and with Nernst-Planck-Poisson (NPP) transport theory. This approach allows measuring concentration dependent diffusion coefficients and ultimately quantifying the potential energy landscapes of mobile ions in a solid ionic material. This is part of the DFG research unit FOR_5065, Energy Landscape and Structure in Ion Conducting Solids (ELSICS) of which KMW is the spokes person.
