Life Sciences

The biological sciences are among the leading sciences of the 21st century.

At Ulm University, students in Biology, Biochemistry as well as Pharmaceutical and Industrial Biotechnology are trained in a practical and research-oriented manner in accordance with the guiding principle of teaching. Our teaching content and qualification goals build on a solid scientific basis.

The topics of our research focus "Stress response and resilience of biological systems" finds it's way into advanced modules of our teaching program. In this way, graduates of the above-mentioned courses are prepared for the global challenges, for example in connection with the consequences of climate change or in the health sector.

Welcome to the winter semester 2022/23!

For the winter semester 22/23 we will meet in presence, even if the shadow of the pandemic, which has been hovering us for two and a half years now, remains over us.

Our professors and lecturers from the biology department have put a lot of effort into preparing for this semester. Those of you who start as first years in the Bachelor's Biology, Bachelor's Biochemistry and Master Biology and Master's Biochemistry, as well as in the teacher training courses containing biology, will benefit from reformed degree programs. We have cut off old habits in these courses and aligned the courses even closer to research. The biological and biochemistry institutes at the University of Ulm explore mechanisms of stress response and resilience in biological systems and investigate them from macroscopic to nanoscopic areas. From responses of ecosystems, interspecies relationships, pathogen-host relationships to physiological processes and their regulation by neuro-hormonal signals to adaptation reactions in cells, microorganisms and finally special properties of molecules, be it proteins or RNA, we here in Ulm investigate the risks and coping strategies that affect us and our environment due to climate change, diseases, mental and physical stress.  In addition to the topics of research, we will also intensify overarching topics.  These include the increasingly important quantitative aspects in biology – "big data" – be it in ecology or in genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics. But also, aspects of philosophical epistemology, and the ethical consideration of innovative methods of biotechnology, as well as scientific project design have a central importance in our degree programs.
Students who study according to the former subject-specific study regulations will also benefit from the newly aligned courses!

Our study coordinators, Dr. John, Dr. Wittig-Blaich and Dr. Keppner, are at your disposal for inquiries and our secretary Mrs. Theilacker will be happy to pass on your inquiries.
We at the Study Commission are looking forward to an exciting semester and wish you lots of fun and success!

Sincerely,
Jan Tuckermann, Dean of Studies Biology

Study Committees

According to §26 Abs. 4 Landeshochschulgesetz Baden-Württemberg it says as follows:

The tasks of the Study Commission include, in particular, developing recommendations for the further development of subjects and forms of study [...], as well as for the use of funds earmarked for study and teaching, and organizing the evaluation of teaching [...] with the inclusion of student criticism of events.

The active development of study and examination regulations, teaching formats and working methods, as well as reflection and discussion in the department is the task of the members of the Study Committee. Student representatives on the Study Committee represent the interests of the students and also have the opportunity to come into contact with lecturers, deans and academic staff.
