Fundamentals of Sustainable Development

M.Sc. Biomedical Engineering

The healthcare sector is responsible for more emissions than air travel and causes 4.6% of global pollutant air emissions. But also the social aspects of sustainable development in the medical technology field are of concern (e.g., access to modern healthcare and working conditions in hospitals and nursing and retirement homes). In this and the consecutive module (“Applications to sustainable Development”) we study and work on challenges and solutions to attaining. Experts from different fields, not just from engineering but also from medicine, economy, phychology etc., report of their particular challenges. In group projects you will elaborate current problems, with a particular focus on balancing the different dimensions (environmental, social and economical) of in sustainable development.

The main objectives are to

  • Analyze the multidimensional concepts of sustainability and the systemic.
  • Apply a systemic approach to sustainable development (systemic thinking, holistic problem solving)
  • Identify and evaluate conflicting goals between economic, social, and environmental factors in biomedical engineering.
  • Explain concrete examples of real-world challenges in technologies with regard to sustainable development.
