Seminar Finanzwirtschaft

Allgemeines

Themen

1.  Technical Trading Rules

Technical analysis involves the use of historical market data, such as price, volume, and other observables, to predict future returns in financial assets. This technique has been widely used by financial market professionals and much investigated by academic researchers. You can find data and charts on numerous technical Indicators within Reuters Eikon. Your first task is to identify and summarize 3 popular/useful technical indicators and try to reconcile the graphs produced by Eikon using pricing and volume data on selected stocks. Your second task is to implement a trading strategy using your identified indicators to examine the success of technical trading rules.

Literature to get started:

Yu, H., Nartea, G.V., Gan, C. and Yao, L.J., (2013). Predictive ability and profitability of simple technical trading rules: Recent evidence from Southeast Asian stock markets. International Review of Economics & Finance, 25, pp.356-371.

2.  Accuracy of analysts’ earnings forecasts

Thomson Reuter’s EIKON Estimate tool offers many information about Earnings Per Share (EPS) estimates such as detailed estimates from individual analysts. It also offers EPS estimates derived by combining individual estimates: “Mean” (simple average of individual estimates) and “SmartEstimate” (putting higher weight on recent forecasts and on top-rated analysts).

Your task is to choose a few German stocks from DAX30 (such that estimated and actual EPS are available in the last 15 years) and to compare estimates from the best analysts and from combination methods to actual ones. Additionally, you should summarize and discuss information about individual analysts with the highest accuracy– their name, company, how accurate they are relative to their peers and how persistent this accuracy is.  Time permitting, you could add more estimates using combination methods not available on EIKON, such as the median.

The second task is to summarize the literature on forecast accuracy differences among individual analysts starting with the paper given below.

Literature to get started:

Michaely, R., Rubin, A., Segal, D. and Vedrashko, A. (2018). Lured by the Consensus. Swiss Finance Institute Research Paper No. 19-06. Available at SSRN: ssrn.com/abstract=3128734

3.  Long-Run Performance of initial Public Offerings

The underpricing of initial public offerings (IPOs) that has been widely discussed in the financial world. Companies issuing stock, whether an initial public offering or a seasoned equity offering, have historically been poor long‐run investments for investors. Your task is to use the Equity offerings app in Reuters Eikon coupled with the methodology of Bessler and Thies, to test the long-run performance of German IPOs from 1995 to 2000.

Literature to get started:

Bessler, W. and Thies, S., (2007). The long-run performance of initial public offerings in Germany. Managerial Finance, 33(6), pp.420-441.

4.  ESG indicators

Many companies are presenting their environmental performance along with the financial one, indicating that investors pay attention to environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings and indicators. Your task is to describe which ESG ratings and indicators exist and to show how they are correlated. You should focus on big companies and you should compare them. Time permitting, you can analyze how future stock returns are related to ESG ratings. All data can be found on EIKON.

Your second task is to discuss if investors pay a price for socially (ir)responsible investing by summarizing the empirical finance literature.

Literature to get started:

Auer, B. R., and Schuhmacher, F. (2016). Do socially (ir) responsible investments pay? New evidence from international ESG data. The Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, 59, 51-62.

Supervisor: Nenad Curcic

Student: Mike Rothenhäusler
