New research area unlocked: Jun.-Prof. Bianca Wiesmayr joined the institute.

Universität Ulm

We are pleased to share that Bianca Wiesmayr has joined our institute as a new junior professor for software engineering (effective April 1, 2026).

Prior to joining Ulm University, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Business Informatics – Software Engineering at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, Austria, where she also completed her doctoral degree in computer science in 2023.

Jun.-Prof. Bianca Wiesmayr’s research area is placed at the intersection of software engineering and industrial automation systems. Sounds complicated? It shouldn’t. Automation software influences your daily life more than you might aware: production automation (for almost all the items we use), energy grids, building infrastructures, and much more relies on high-quality control software.

Her research evaluates software engineering practices for industrial automation and adapts them where necessary – to help industrial experts create high-quality control software.

Bianca Wiesmayr aims to provide her research results to academics and industrial experts through usable tools: She will continue her engagement in open-source development as a part of the project team for Eclipse 4diac, an open-source infrastructure designed for control software engineering.

Bianca Wiesmayr says about her new role: “I am delighted to continue my research at the Ulm University. The institute provides a great environment for my work, as it combines expertise in fields like AI for software engineering, software quality assurance, or domain-specific languages. I aim to contribute to basic research questions, but also apply my results – for instance, by collaborating with industry. And I particularly enjoy designing my own lectures!”

If you are a student, consider joining her modules on “Software Engineering for Industrial Automation” (summer term) or “Software Product Lines” (winter term). She is also actively looking for students who wish to pursue a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD thesis in software engineering under her supervision.

The institute extends its warmest welcome to Bianca Wiesmayr and looks forward to collaborations.
