Removing CO₂ from the atmosphere is a key technology for counteracting climate change and a strategic research focus of our working group. Together with colleagues from the Technical University of Munich, and within the CDRterra initiative of the Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt, we are investigating how industrial cooling towers can be retrofitted to serve as absorbers for the direct removal of CO₂ from air. The captured CO₂ is then released through electrochemical solvent regeneration. Recently, all consortia within CDRterra came together for the first time at a kick-off event in Kassel. It was inspiring to exchange ideas with colleagues on the diverse research approaches being pursued and to experience the strong momentum within this community. I am looking forward to the exciting scientific and technological challenges ahead in the coming years.
