Methods of Artificial Intelligence enable the realization of advanced cognitive skills within computer systems. Proactive planning, reasoning, autonomous learning, and understanding natural language are just some of such skills that characterize Intelligent Systems. These systems are particularly flexible, adaptive, and robust, accomplish complex tasks, and are being deployed in many areas. Fields of application of today's AI techniques include autonomous systems, process control, learning systems, Internet services, assistance and decision-support systems, and modern computer games.
Research at the Institute of Artificial Intelligence focuses on planning and decision making, knowledge modelling, cognitive systems, automated inference and semantic technologies. The Transregional Collaborative Research Centre SFB/Transregio 62 "A Companion-Technology for Cognitive Technical Systems" constitutes the primary research effort, within which most of the work is being carried out.
The scope of lectures offered by the institute includes both introductory courses on Artificial Intelligence and in-depth lectures in the areas of automated planning, knowledge modelling, automated theorem proving, semantic web and multi-agent systems.
