Research Interest and Projects
My current research interests focus on the provider view of Cloud and Edge Computing as well as High Performance Computing Infrastructures. This covers not only all technologies from compute and storage systems, the interconnects between them but similarly how they are connected to the Wide Area Networks, how sensors and actors at the Edge can be integrated. Within the two research groups in the insitute we investigate the similar challenges on different time scales on tightly coupled systems with focus on high performance and embedded computing environments and loosely coupled distributed systems where in particular analysis of sensor data, analaysis at the network edge as well as integration of large scale data centre infrastructures are of interest. Due to our close relationship to BelWü we also investigate the ISP providers perspective in such scenarios.
We work with our partners from academia and industry on a couple of interesting research projects and are always looking for new partners and interesting challenges in these fields.
Selected topics we investigate in our current projects:
- Cloud and Edge Computing Infrastructures
- Smart and Efficient Execution Environments
- Future High Performance Computing System Architectures
- Smart Network Operations
- Operating Systems
- Real-time Systems and End-to-End Quality of Service
- Application of machine learning to Data Centre, Network and Cloud Operations
My teaching activities cover various areas in the field of Data Centre Technologies and its application. We cover basic as well as emerging technologies in the field of Data Centre Networks. In close cooperation with Lutz Schubert the lectures on Cloud Computing as well as Parallel and Heterogeneous Computing System cover the hardware and software stack as well as the building blocks for modern Data Centre.
In our various seminars and thesis topics current trends and topics in the field of Clouds, Edge Computing as well as Internet of Things are covered.
Our seminards and labs, in particular the Microcongtroller lab, focus on the practical application of methods and approaches to real world inspired problems.
I contributed to more than 20 collaborative research projects on national and international level in various roles. I have coordinated large scale projects on European level, BMBF and other funding bodies. I contributed as pricipal investigator to projects from fundamental research up to applied and industrial focused projects.
A current list of the projects at the institute can be found here.
Beside my duties as Institute Director I also serve as CIO and Director of the integrated information centre kiz, the central IT-services unit of Ulm University
