Gilbert Weidinger lab
The Weidinger lab studies the cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating regeneration of the fin and heart in zebrafish. We aim to identify the importance of cellular plasticity, in particular cellular dedifferentiation, for regenerative growth of these adult organs. Furthermore, we study the molecular mechanisms regulating cellular plasticity, tissue growth and patterning. Currently, we focus on the roles of several signaling pathways, in particular BMP, Wnt and NF-kappaB signaling. To facilitate our studies of adult regeneration, we also develop novel transgenic tools and injury models.
Overall our goal is to shed light on the mechanisms underlying the fascinating process of naturally occurring adult organ regeneration. A better understanding of these mechanisms will hopefully aid in the development of regenerative therapies in humans.
