Building AI competences through experience-based and tool-based learning

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become ubiquitous and is fundamentally changing our lives. However, many people lack a basic understanding of AI - often referred to as AI literacy. A lack of AI literacy harbours risks such as data breaches, the spread of misinformation and social inequality. In order to meet these challenges, the targeted development of AI skills in school education is of strategic importance. Experience-based learning, in which pupils interact directly with AI and "experience" how it works, is particularly promising.

As part of the project, a tool was developed that enables experience-based learning. The tool is embedded in a didactic concept for a 90-minute teaching unit and is ideal for use in secondary schools. The teaching unit focuses on central AI concepts such as supervised learning and image classification. With the help of the tool, students can independently vary different training data, observe the behaviour of the AI and thus better understand the opportunities and limitations of AI.

A central aim of the project was to investigate the effectiveness of experience-based learning in comparison to traditional teaching methods. To this end, the teaching unit was tested and evaluated in a large-scale randomised field experiment with 1,346 pupils from Baden-Württemberg. The results show that both forms of teaching - with and without the tool - significantly increase knowledge about AI, reinforce the willingness to engage with AI and reduce fears when dealing with the technology. It should be emphasised in particular that pupils with a low affinity for AI benefited disproportionately from experience-based learning.

Project period: 2022 - 2024

Transfer
