Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

Master of Science (MSc)

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology

Pharmaceutical biotechnology is a science of the future that deals with the development of innovative strategies for the rapid and efficient transfer of the latest medical and pharmacological findings into safe and highly effective pharmaceutical products. It deliberately operates at the interface between (bio)chemistry, medicine and biotechnology and thus combines many aspects of modern life sciences.

Current information: The Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (PBT) degree programme is being further developed in terms of content and structure and will be given a new name: Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology (PMB). Applications for the new PMB degree programme will be accepted starting in the 2026/2027 winter semester. Applications for PBT will no longer be accepted after this date. For more information, see Latest news.

More about the course

The cooperative master's programme "Pharmaceutical Biotechnology" at Ulm University and Biberach University of Applied Sciences teaches students how Medicine and pharmacological findings are translated into highly effective pharmaceutical products. In a cooperative degree programme at both locations, students learn about the interfaces between Chemistry, Biology, Medicine and Biotechnology. The focus is on bioprocess development and the production of therapeutic proteins as well as industrial processes. Graduates have a wide range of career opportunities in the biotechnological and pharmaceutical industries.

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology changes to Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology

The existing Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (PBT) degree programme is being further developed in terms of content and structure and will be given a new name: Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology (PMB).
This development is our response to current scientific developments in the field of pharmaceutical and molecular biotechnology.

Applications from the 2026/2027 winter semester

From the 2026/2027 winter semester onwards, applications will only be accepted for the new Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology programme. Applications for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology will no longer be accepted from this point onwards.

Cooperation and future sponsorship

The Pharmaceutical Biotechnology programme was run in cooperation with Biberach University of Applied Sciences. The new Pharmaceutical and Molecular Biotechnology programme will be offered exclusively by Ulm University in the future.

What does this mean for prospective students?

  • The programme will be modernised and further developed in terms of subject matter.
  • The reorientation will strengthen aspects of current protein, RNA and (stem) cell-based therapies in particular, as well as bioinformatic applications, including artificial intelligence.
  • In the future, organisational responsibility will lie entirely with Ulm University.
  • Further information on content, structure and the application process will be published shortly.

Study content in a nutshell

On the one hand, the Master's programme focuses on bioprocess development and the production of therapeutic proteins and antibodies. On the other hand, industrial processes are also trained: from planning and implementation to the documentation and evaluation of processes.

Study objective

The aim of the "Pharmaceutical Biotechnology" master's programme is to familiarise students with the latest scientific findings in the development and manufacture of pharmaceutical products. They acquire comprehensive knowledge in bioprocess development, the production of therapeutic proteins and antibodies as well as in the planning and implementation of industrial processes. They also learn to work independently and to deal with the legal and business aspects of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology.

Special features of the (study/degree) programme

The cooperative study/degree programme combines the reinforcements of both higher education institutions and creates optimal conditions for success. Two semesters at Biberach University of Applied Sciences offer practical study content, while the semester at Ulm University focuses on scientific topics. This combination facilitates entry into industry and at the same time opens up paths for a scientific career. The master's thesis, carried out in a company or at one of the two higher education institutions, provides targeted preparation for the transition from studying to working life.

The study/degree programme is administered by Ulm University.

Study abroad

A great way to broaden your horizons in a discipline is to study at a foreign university. Ulm University students can apply for one or two semesters abroad at numerous universities, both throughout Europe as part of the ERASMUS programme and outside Europe. If lectures are not required, internships and theses at other universities are also possible.

Ulm University has exchange agreements with over 100 universities in 26 countries.
