Animal Caretaker / Specialisation in Research and Clinic Care

What does the training offer you?
During your training as an animal keeper specialising in research and clinics, you will learn about the various animal welfare regulations, animal housing and husbandry options. Tasks during the training include caring for animals, data entry using special software, and determining and assessing animal health. Important topics include reproduction, breeding and rearing, as well as the systematics, anatomy and physiology of animals.
After gaining the relevant professional experience, you can take on the role of area manager or master animal keeper (after further professional training). Regular further training is offered in the form of specialist conferences organised by the IGTp (Interest Group of Animal Keepers).
What makes the training at the university so special?
The training to become an animal keeper takes place at the Animal Research Centre of the University of Ulm. Here you will learn how to handle the various types of laboratory animals correctly. The practical training takes place in the various animal husbandry areas of the Animal Research Centre, usually with mice, rats, sheep, pigs, rabbits and frogs. The theoretical training mainly takes place in block lessons at the Bertha von Suttner School in Karlsruhe/Ettlingen. In addition, internal lessons are held at regular intervals.
