What does the apprenticeship offer you?

Scientific glass apparatus makers are the technical version of glassblowers.

At the University of Ulm, our glassblowing workshop produces glass apparatuses that researchers need for their experiments. These are usually custom-made pieces that we design together with our customers to ensure the apparatus meets their exact requirements.

As an apprentice in scientific glass apparatus construction, you learn the fundamental craft techniques needed to turn glass tubes and rods into complex laboratory apparatuses.

During your apprenticeship, you will learn:

  • how to use table burners and hand burners
  • how to cut glass tubes and hollow glass bodies mechanically or thermally
  • how to heat glass in a flame so you can shape and fuse it
  • how and when to blow into molten glass
  • how to control the stresses that occur in the material during hot processing
  • how to drill, grind, and polish glass
  • how to read technical drawings and build apparatuses accordingly
  • how to check your work using rulers and calipers
  • and much more

Your practical training takes place in the glassblowing workshop, which is part of the Scientific Workshop at the University of Ulm.

In addition to training in a workshop like ours, there is also the option to learn the profession at one of the specialized schools:
