Apache & MySQL

No services should run permanently in the pool (for such purposes please contact the KIZ). For testing purposes, it can be useful to start a service which will only run until you log out. This is generally allowed in the pool.

Some services are needed so often that it seems to us that the corresponding software packages are pre-installed but not active. The purpose of this is: You can save disk quota by not installing the complete Apache server on your home directory, but only the configuration files. See below for instructions.

Apache

• In the start menu (on the desktop) .../SGI_Misc/xampp.../start_apache.bat click
  ⇒ Apache runs until you close the newly created window.
  ⇒ Just click away the firewall message.
• At the first start, more precisely: if there is no folder "apache" on the desktop, you get a basic framework copied to the desktop with "apache" and "htdocs", "logs" and "cgi-bin" in it. There you can let off steam.
• If the basic framework is not sufficient you can build your own httpd.conf
  ⇒ much work, for small change requests better ask in the SGI.
• Just click away the firewall message.

MySQL

• Click in the start menu (on the desktop) .../SGI_Misc/xampp.../start_mysql_server.bat
  ⇒ mysql_server runs until you close the newly created window.
  ⇒ Just click away the firewall message.
• At the first start, more precisely: if the directory does not exist, the basic database is copied to h:\mysql_db. Normally this is only changed by SQL clients. To reset all changes you can delete the directory if the sql-server is not running at the moment.
• In the start menu there is also a SQL client to start.
