Open consultation at the Teddy Clinic Ulm
Medical students from Ulm University "treat" cuddly toys

Ulm University

The Teddy Clinic Ulm is open again! For two days, student teddy docs will be attending to the ailments of dolls and cuddly toys, diagnosing and treating them together with the teddy parents. With this campaign, students from Ulm University want to take away the fear of medical examinations from children aged three and over. On Tuesday, 3 June, children and parents or grandparents can drop in from 1:30 to 4 pm at the Eselsberg Community Centre (Bürgerzentrum Eselsberg). Registration is not necessary.

At the Teddy Clinic, kindergarten and primary school children slip into the "parent role" and accompany their "sick" dolls or teddies. This helps to reduce children's fear of medical treatment - whether at the doctor's or hospital. "Experience has shown that children from the age of around three to four benefit most from the activity," says Melanie Grüner from the organisation team. The young teddy parents can also examine and treat their cuddly toys themselves in a set-up based on real hospital procedures. They will be supported and guided by the "Teddy-Docs", over 150 volunteer students from various subjects at Ulm University.

The children are allowed to help "x-ray" broken bones and determine the "blood group" of their cuddly toy in the laboratory, before large and small emergencies are treated in the operating theatre with plasters or bandages. Each fluffy patient also receives a U-booklet in which examinations and values are recorded. For the journey home, the Teddy Clinic's pharmacy provides the brave teddy parents with effective medication such as "Smarticillin" or "Bonbonin".

One morning, the teeth and dentures of the cuddly patients can also be examined. Dentistry students bring along dental models and toothbrushes and playfully demonstrate good dental hygiene to the children. The children can brush the teeth of their cuddly toy or a dental model. There will also be X-ray images of the jaw to marvel at.

The Teddy Clinic organised by the Fachschaft (subject-related student body) is being held for the 15th time. On two mornings, it is only open to kindergartens from Ulm, Neu-Ulm and the surrounding area. Tuesday afternoons are open consultation hours for children and parents. No broken toys will be repaired!
