Translations into English

When addressing and providing information to international or English-speaking target audiences, terms should be translated correctly and used consistently.

Important information

  • As the University of Ulm is part of the European Higher Education Area, the Executive Board has designated ‘British English’ as the official language version.

  • The University of Ulm is translated as ‘Ulm University’ – as in the logo.

Below you will find some useful tools for translating specialist academic terms from German into English and vice versa:

Online glossary (database)
This comprehensive database with a search function for German and English provides translations for a wide range of academic terminology, particularly relating to the German higher education sector. This database is constantly being expanded and refined. Do you have any suggestions, or is a term missing? If so, please contact Anke Zeppenfeld.

Glossary (PDF)
This is an abridged overview containing translations of the most important terms specifically for the University of Ulm, available to download and print if required.

Style guide (PDF)
Here you will find guidance on the correct use of forms of address, titles, times and dates, and much more.

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to the textbook “English for University Administration Staff – Self-Study Materials and Glossaries”, produced by the DAAD International Academy.

Please note: Some terms are used differently in that publication than at the University of Ulm. We would therefore ask you to always look for suitable solutions first in the glossary and style guide we have provided, and to use the DAAD publication as a supplementary resource.

The book is available for free download here.
