Job Opportunities

Academic Associates (Ph.D. candidates)

You will find open positions at the bottom of this page.

Besides applications to job advertisements, we are also looking forward to your application as an Academic Associate/Ph.D candidate for one of our research areas (see Methods and Areas of Application) if you are an outstanding candidate. Requirement is  an above-average master (or equivalent) degree in engineering or in computer science, physics or maths with technical background. Please send, preferably by e-mail, your application with the usual documents (CV, references, transcript of record since university entrance qualification, ...) to the respective research group leader.

Student Assistants (HiWis)

We are looking forward to hire students who want to get involved in projects at our institute as student assistants. Please refer to Studentische Arbeiten (German only) to find open positions or theses. Alternatively, you can also contact any member or the leader of the research group you would like to join as a student member.

Open Positions

The Institute of Measurement, Control and Microtechnology (MRM) at Ulm University is looking for highly motivated PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to join our research team.

We are seeking candidates interested in advancing research at the intersection of dynamical systems, control, machine learning, and robotics, with opportunities to work on fundamental methodological questions as well as their application to complex engineering systems. Our current research interests include:

  • Data-driven control systems
  • Scientific machine learning
  • Soft robotics

About us:

The Institute of Measurement, Control and Microtechnology at Ulm University conducts research at the interface of control engineering, machine learning, robotics, and autonomous systems.

Our work combines mathematical and data-driven methods with engineering applications. We aim to develop new approaches for understanding, modeling, and controlling complex dynamical systems while closely connecting methodological research with emerging technologies.

We offer an interdisciplinary research environment with opportunities to collaborate across engineering, computer science, and related disciplines.

What you will be doing:

You will work on theoretical, computational, and/or experimental research questions related to data-driven control, scientific machine learning, or soft robotics. Your work will include developing novel methods for learning, modeling, and controlling dynamical systems, implementing and evaluating algorithms, and applying them to challenging engineering and robotic systems.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Conduct independent research and contribute to ongoing research projects
  • Develop new methods at the intersection of control, dynamical systems, and machine learning
  • Implement and evaluate algorithms using Python, MATLAB, and related tools
  • Publish and present your research at leading international conferences and in scientific journals
  • Collaborate with researchers within MRM and across disciplines
  • Contribute to teaching and the supervision of student projects and theses

Your profile:

  • Completed university degree in engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a comparable field.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and the ability to work independently and responsibly.
  • Above-average academic record.
  • Solid knowledge of control theory and machine learning (ideally also statistics and robotics).
  • Experience with higher-level programming languages such as C++, Python, MATLAB, or Julia.

We offer:

  • A collaborative and team-oriented working environment at the forefront of innovation, with excellent opportunities for professional development and career growth.
  • Salary according to E13 TV-L (german).
  • The opportunity to live and work in Ulm, a city offering one of the highest qualities of life in Germany.
  • The opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree (PhD).
  • Direct involvement in cutting-edge developments in research, technology, and teaching.

Interested?

Please submit your application, including the usual supporting documents (CV, copies of certificates and transcripts from the Abitur onwards, and a current academic transcript), by email with “[application]” in the title to Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Beckers at thomas.beckers(at)uni-ulm.de. We are happy to answer any questions regarding this position prior to your application.
