Studying Philosophy in Ulm

There are various ways to study Philosophy at the School of Humanities: In some degree programmes, you can take Philosophy as a minor or Applied subject; in many programmes, you can take Philosophy courses from the interdisciplinary compulsory-optional catalogue; and in some programmes, a specific module forms part of the curriculum (e.g. ‘Computer Science and Society’ in the BA in Computer Science), whilst in Medicine it is offered as an elective. In addition, all students can choose philosophy courses as part of the ASQ programme.

In our philosophy programme, we place particular emphasis on the philosophy of science and applied ethics, as these courses specifically bring Philosophy and the subject disciplines into dialogue with one another and promote theoretical and practical reflection on the content of one’s own discipline. Within the ASQ programme, we also offer courses in the traditional areas of theoretical and practical Philosophy, as well as the history of Philosophy.

If you are studying Philosophy as a minor or Applied subject, or wish to take Philosophy courses as part of the interdisciplinary compulsory elective catalogue, all courses in the ‘Philosophy and Society’ section are open to you. Unlike in other ASQ courses, you can earn 4 or 6 ECTS credits in these courses, for example through longer written assignments. Simply speak to the lecturer at the start of the semester to arrange this.

Minor subject and Applied subject

In some study/degree programmes, Philosophy can also be studied as a minor or Applied subject and credited towards the degree; relevant provisions are already in place in the following study regulations:
