Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)

Biophysics Lab Course, Institute of Biophysics

Idea: We learn how AFM experiments can be used to investigate the local mechanical properties of cells.

Overview

Topography and local stiffness of fixed mouse fibroblasts (cell line NIH/3T3 ATCC) is investigated with an atomic force microscope in force-volume mode.

Young’s modulus of the cells is determined and compared to cells, which were previously treated with cytochalasin D, a fungal toxin that inhibits actin polymerization and elongation.
