Ancient Medicine and Philosophy - Workshop
Łódź, 18–19 May 2022
On May 18th and 19th 2022, the international workshop "Normativity & Praxis: Visions of good life in Antiquity – physical, spiritual, and social. Ancient Medicine and Philosophy" will take place in Łódz, Poland, jointly organised by the University of Łódz and the Institute of the History, Philosophy and Ethics of Medicine at the University of Ulm. The workshop aims to bring together scholars from different academic disciplines such as classical philology, philosophy and medical history and ethics in order to explore the reception and transfer of medical and philosophical knowledge in antiquity – and beyond. Contributions will focus on the intertwined connection between ancient medicine and philosophy in different cultural and religious contexts. They will address a wide range of aspects, including the common theoretical foundations of both disciplines, as well as their competitive relationship and mutual complementarity, the embodiment of both forms of knowledge in individual historical figures, the different concepts of health and "good life“ as found in our ancient sources, and the Nachleben of ancient medical-philosophical concepts in later periods.
