The German University in Cairo and the German International University are opening a campus on Oberer Eselsberg and expanding their collaboration with Ulm University and Ulm University of Applied Sciences. The aim is to strengthen academic cooperation and support each other. Representatives from all four institutions have signed a corresponding agreement at Ulm Town Hall.
For 25 years, Ulm University and the German University in Cairo (GUC) – of which the Ulm University was a founding partner – have been working closely together. It was founded by the physicist Professor Ashraf Mansour, who once completed his PhD in Ulm and who, as Chairman of the GUC's University Council, continues to steer its course to this day. With the new presence in Ulm Science Park – the GUC is renting premises in Lise-Meitner-Straße – Mansour aims to ensure the long-term future of this project close to his heart. The GUC is establishing the ‘German Universities Ulm Campus’ in collaboration with the German International University (GIU), which was founded in 2019, is based in Egypt’s New Capital, and whose founding partner is the Ulm University of Applied Sciences (THU).
The Ulm site is intended to optimise existing academic partnerships with universities in the region, as well as to foster collaboration with businesses and associations, the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm, and the state of Baden-Württemberg. Its location in the Science Park is intended to facilitate joint activities between the contracting parties thanks to the physical proximity. The future collaboration will promote the mobility of students and teaching staff, as well as bilateral research. There are also plans to enable students to obtain dual degrees.
“A major milestone for collaboration”
The parties involved signed a corresponding memorandum of understanding on Monday 27 July, in the presence of Ulm’s mayor, Martin Ansbacher. “I am delighted that the joint campus in Ulm is going ahead, and I hope it will be a great success,” said Ansbacher, who welcomed a large delegation from Egypt, including many students, to the town hall. Professor Mansour was also delighted: “Today marks a major milestone for the collaboration with the University of Ulm, the THU and the state of Baden-Württemberg.”

The partnership opens up new prospects for our students and researchers and reinforces our university’s international focus,” said University President Professor Michael Weber. “In this way, we are making an important contribution to the training of highly qualified specialists, whom our region urgently needs and who are, at the same time, ideally prepared for international careers.”

About the German University in Cairo
The German University in Cairo is a non-profit private university founded in 2002 on the initiative of Professor Ashraf Mansour. Today, around 10,000 young people study there across 71 degree programmes accredited in Germany. The language of instruction at GUC is English, although there are compulsory German courses. The Cairo campus’s location in an industrial park where German companies have established themselves and ensure strong links with the business community.
About the German International University
Founded in 2019, the German International University has its headquarters in Egypt’s New Capital. The bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes are based on German curricula, regulations and standards. The practice-oriented training is designed to reinforce scientific, technical, economic and cultural cooperation with Germany and other international partners.
