Ulm University has made significant progress in the THE World University Rankings. In the Times Higher Education magazine’s global rankings, the Swabian university is ranked 239th out of a total of 2,297 listed institutions. The previous year, it had been ranked in the 251–300 band. Within Germany, it came 23rd out of a total of 57 universities listed.
“We have performed very well for a university of this size. We are, of course, delighted about this,” said the new President of Ulm University, Professor Michael Kühl. With around 10,000 students, Ulm University is a medium-sized university. The top German University is the Technical University of Munich, followed by LMU Munich and the University of Heidelberg. In a country-by-country comparison, Ulm University secured 23rd place, outperforming several technical universities and larger comprehensive universities. The ranking results are particularly strong in the fields of Psychology and Medicine. In these areas, Ulm University made it into the top 10 per cent – even on a global scale.
A key factor in this strong performance was, not least, the results in the categories ‘Research Quality’ (84.5 out of 100) and ‘Industry’ (98.6 out of 100). The assessment took into account, on the one hand, the number and quality of scientific publications, as well as technology transfer and support for industry through innovation and inventions. “This strong performance in this area is not only support for our University’s research strength, but also impressively demonstrates that the scientific findings of our researchers are not only of academic value, but also directly benefit the economy and society,” said the new President of Ulm University, Professor Michael Kühl, who in this context highlighted Ulm University’s integration into the Science City.
Ulm University has a clear profile as a so-called ‘STEM and Med University’. Its four research focuses include Green Energy, Quantum Science and Technology, Life-Long Health and From Data to Knowledge. “Our aim is to provide solutions to the societal challenges of the future. And as can be seen from the ranking results, our research is also being put into practice,” says Kühl.
The THE World University Rankings are among the most prestigious ranking lists worldwide. The ranking list is topped by the University of Oxford in the UK, now for the eleventh year running. In second place is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. Third place is shared by Princeton and Stanford (USA); and places four to ten are also held by universities in the UK and the United States. The top continental European University is ETH Zurich, in twelfth place. Tsinghua University from China has moved up to eleventh place.
