Images and photography

Images help to present research, teaching, work and student life at Ulm University. They make content more engaging, illustrate key topics and contribute to a consistent visual appearance across the university.

Ulm University’s visual identity

Ulm University's visual style is guided by its brand values: Excellent. Focused. Connected. Images should focus on real people and authentic situations from research, teaching, student life and campus life.

Practical guidance

Ulm University’s imagery focuses on people in their everyday study, research and working environments. Images should feel authentic and provide a realistic insight into research, teaching and campus life.

Typical subjects include:

  • Researchers carrying out experiments or taking measurements
  • Students in lectures, seminars or study groups
  • Staff members in their working environment
  • Everyday situations on campus

Images are most effective when they appear natural and authentic. A clear focus, engaging composition and a recognisable connection to Ulm University help communicate information in a clear and appealing way.

Please avoid:

  • Images without the necessary usage rights
  • Stock photos with no connection to Ulm University
  • Overly staged or artificial situations
  • Outdated imagery
  • AI-generated people or situations

AI-generated images

Ulm University’s visual identity is built around authentic images of real people, places and situations. Wherever possible, use genuine photographs that reflect everyday life in research, teaching, work and on campus.

AI tools may be used to support image editing, for example for minor retouching, technical enhancements or removing distracting elements. Collages and compositions created from authentic photographs are also permitted.

AI-generated images of real people, situations or events should not be used in Ulm University’s external communications. AI-generated graphics and illustrations may be used as additional visual elements, but they are not part of Ulm University’s visual identity and should therefore only be used in exceptional cases.
