For many years, the Ulmer Universitätsgesellschaft e.V. (Ulm University Association) has been bringing the work of scientists from the University and the University Hospital to the city’s residents. With the 35th lecture series, ‘Experience Knowledge – Ulm University in the City Centre’, in November 2026, the UUG is once again demonstrating that Ulm stands for excellent research and impressive practical application. Over three Saturday mornings, experts from Ulm will present their research topics in a way that is accessible to all – ranging from secure retirement provision and children’s health to microelectronics for natural and artificial intelligence. The lectures will take place at 11.00 am each day at Sparkasse Ulm, Hans-und-Sophie-Scholl-Platz; admission is free.
Saturday, 7 November 2026, 11.00 am:
“Living longer – how can we keep pensions secure?”
In her lecture, Prof. Dr An Chen, Head of the Institute of Insurance Science, will examine the implications of rising life expectancy for retirement provision and explain how pension systems can remain financially sustainable in the long term. The focus will be on collective pension models and the question of how accumulated capital can be converted into a reliable income for the rest of one’s life.

“Children’s Health in Germany – the ‘Komm mit in das gesunde Boot’ prevention programme” ’
Prof. Dr Susanne Kobel, Senior Scientist at the German Centre for Child and Adolescent Health (DZKJ) in Ulm, presents the prevention programme ‘Come Aboard the Healthy Boat’, which supports nurseries and primary schools in effectively tackle a lack of physical activity, unhealthy diets and excessive screen time. Central to this is the question of how children can be playfully encouraged to be more active and adopt healthier behaviours, and what role educational staff and parents play in this.
Saturday, 21 November 2026, 11.00 am
“Microelectronicsin the Mind – Technology for Natural and Artificial Intelligence”
In his lecture, the Head of the Institute of Microelectronics, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Maurits Ortmanns, provides a vivid insight into the world of microelectronics – from tiny transistors to highly complex microchips. Using practical examples, the engineer will demonstrate how implanted microchips enable people with paralysis to move, and just how much electronics lies behind AI systems such as ChatGPT.
