The Ulmer Universitätsgesellschaft e.V. (Ulm University Association) (UUG) regularly brings the latest developments and innovative procedures from various disciplines at Ulm University and Ulm University Hospital to the public. With the 34th lecture series "Experience knowledge - Ulm University in the city centre" in April, the UUG is once again making it clear that Ulm stands for excellent research and impressive practice. With its lecture series, the university society combines scientific research and citizenship. Admission to the three lectures, each on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. in the Sparkasse Ulm in the Neue Mitte Ulm, is free.
On Saturday, 11 April, the head of the Institute of Stochastics, Professor Evgeny Spodarev, will give a lecture entitled "From concrete cracks to Buddha - how stochastics makes the invisible visible". He presents what cracks in concrete structures and the meditative states of Tibetan monks have in common. Mathematics finds an elegant common denominator: in both cases, the aim is to detect hidden structures and changes of state in huge amounts of data.
Professor Birgit Esser is researching sustainable storage materials for renewable energies. In her lecture on Saturday, 18 April, "On the way to sustainable batteries", she will present organic electrode materials that are produced from available or sustainable sources, are low or hardly toxic and can be used for many types of batteries. Esser heads the Institute of Organic Chemistry II and Advanced Materials and is Ulm's spokesperson for the POLiS Cluster of Excellence for research into future batteries.
Like other cancers, blood cancer or leukaemia develops gradually over a long period of time. It is therefore conceivable that its occurrence can be prevented if precursors are detected early and stabilised at this status, so to speak. Professor Miriam Erlacher, Medical Director of the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, will present the current status of research on Saturday, 25 April under the title "Prevention of leukaemia - is it possible?".
