Ulm University awards scholarships
Pupils research on simulated worlds

Pupils who are interested in computer science can explore simulated worlds and participate in real research projects at Ulm University with the support of a scholarship. The pupils are supervised by staff from the Communication and Information Centre (Kommunikations- und Informationszentrum, kiz) over the course of a school year. A virtual meeting is planned for about once a month. Adolescents who are in 11th grade at a regional high school and have good marks in both computer science and natural sciences are eligible to apply. The eight scholarships are for up to 1000 euros each. The funds are intended to be used primarily for purchasing a suitable laptop and covering travel expenses.

Starting in mid-November, scholarship recipients will be able to participate in research projects at Ulm University. The projects include topics such as the Internet of Things, which refers to intelligent devices or machines that are interconnected and also connected to the internet – from smart homes to self-driving cars. Communication within these networks doesn’t always run smoothly, and the energy requirement is often much too high. With the help of simulators that are being developed at Ulm University, researchers are searching for solutions to these problems, and in the future, they will be supported by the pupils who have been selected to receive the scholarships. Further projects simulate the load distribution when using video conference services or with distributed database systems. Funding for the scholarships comes from the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg (Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg, MWK).

Interested pupils should submit a letter of motivation, a CV in tabular form, a copy of their school transcript and a teacher recommendation by 30 October in the form of a pdf to the email address info(at)simulierte-welten.de
