Knowledge and technology transfer

Ulm University puts knowledge into practice and strengthens the exchange between research, economy and society.

Networking knowledge, enabling innovation

As a civic university, Ulm University has a special connection to regional development. We see knowledge and technology transfer as a dynamic exchange with society – through research collaborations, academic consultancy, the support for start-ups or in dialogue with the public. After all, transfer is one of the most important tasks of a university alongside research and teaching, which is why it is also referred to as the “third mission”.

Our researchers transfer scientific findings into practice and bring new ideas from the field back to the laboratory. For example, they are driving forward the development of sustainable energy storage systems with innovative approaches to battery research or working on technologies in quantum science that will make future communication safer and more efficient. As part of the Science City Ulm, we cooperate closely with partners from research, economy and politics in order to actively shape the transfer of knowledge and technology in a responsible and forward-looking manner.

Our mission statement: Third Mission at Ulm University

The aims and principles for knowledge and technology transfer at Ulm University are anchored in our mission statement and guide our actions.

Our aim is to make knowledge accessible to everyone

Knowledge transfer is a central pillar of Ulm University's social mission. As an internationally oriented university with strong regional roots, we not only want to develop scientific knowledge, but also make it available where it is needed: in education, economy, politics and civil society.

From research to practice

Technology transfer at Ulm University brings excellent research into practice. Through close cooperation with industry and targeted support with patent applications and the founding of start-ups, scientific findings are turned into marketable products and processes.

How we support technology transfer

Building bridges between research and transfer

Ulm University promotes the targeted transfer of research results into practice. With specialised services, we support our researchers in protecting and exploiting innovative ideas and successfully transferring them to economic viability and society. Our services:

Inventions and patents

The IP Management supports our researchers in protecting and realising their intellectual property. Irrespective of start-up intentions, as a central point of contact in day-to-day research, it promotes the protection of results, the evaluation of potential and the transfer to industry and society, for example through spin-offs or licensing.

Start-up support

The Entrepreneurs Campus is the central point of contact for anyone with an entrepreneurial mindset who wants to realise their own ideas. It supports members of Ulm University who are interested in founding a company on their way to a science-based spin-off through practical courses, qualification programmes, inspiration and individual advice.

Strengthening regional innovation

As the heart of the science city of Ulm, we are part of a dynamic network of universities, research institutions and high-tech companies on the “Oberer Eselsberg”. With projects such as the POLiS cluster of excellence for new battery technologies, the Entrepreneurs Campus for promoting start-ups and application-oriented research in cooperation with the DLR site in Ulm, we bring knowledge into practice – our contribution to further expanding the science city into a leading innovation hub.
