Selection procedure for the degree programme in Medicine
In Medicine, 5 % of available places at German universities are allocated to foreign applicants. Ulm University reserves the following number of places for foreign applicants:
18 places in the winter semester
Demand for these places is very high. In the last application process Ulm University received approx. 300 applications for Medicine. Chances of obtaining a place in this programme thus only exist if previous grades and the TestAS result are excellent.
For the winter semester 2021/22, applicants with a selection procedure grade of up to 1.3 have been admitted.
For the winter semester 2022/23, applicants with a selection procedure grade of up to 1.4 have been admitted.
For the winter semester 2023/24, applicants with a selection procedure grade of up to 1.3 have been admitted.
Selection is based on the following criteria
1. The average grade of the university entrance qualification
2. The standard score of the Core Test and the module “Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences” obtained in the TestAS
3. The grade of the language certificate for university admission
Information on the digital TestAS
If you have taken the digital TestAS with the subject module "Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences" or "Medicine" or "Life Sciences", it will be taken into account using this comparison table.
German language certificate
The proof of language competence needs to be submitted by the (application) deadline. Ulm University accepts only the following language certificates:
- German-taught university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur, Matura, Reifezeugnis, etc.)
- German-taught study programme with at least 50% German als the language of instruction
- Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang –DSH 2 or DSH 3
- Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache – TestDaF, with level 4 in all four parts of the TestDaF examination
- A pass in the test section Deutsch/German of the higher education entrance assessment exam at a Studienkolleg (institution that prepares students to study at university level)
- Deutsches Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz (German Language Certificate of the Education Ministers Conference) –DSD II (level 2)
- Österreichisches Sprachdiplom C2 - ÖSD C2
- telc Deutsch C 1 Hochschule
- Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (GDS)
- German as Language A in the IB Diploma
- Deutsche Sprachprüfung II of the Sprachen- und Dolmetscher-Institut München
- German language certificates recognised through bilateral agreements or other agreements made by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK) as sufficient for pursuing university level.
Calculation of the selection grade is based on the following:
a) 50% on the average grade of the university entrance qualification, and
b) 50% on the result of the TestAS. The mean of the standard score earned in the Core Test and the standard score of the module “Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences” make up the grade according to the conversion table.
Scores expressed as grades are indicated to one decimal place; they are not rounded.
The grade calculated from a) and b) is raised by 0.3 if the language certificate for university admission, DSH-3, TestDaF 4 x 5 or the exam part “Deutsch/German” of the assessment test at a Studienkolleg shows the result “sehr gut/excellent”.
In case of equal ranks of selection grades, applicants with a better TestAS result are preferentially considered. In case of continued equal ranks, the lot decides.

It is not possible to submit missing documents after this application deadline.
The application for admission must be supported by the following documents:
- University entrance qualification
- TestAS (Test for Academic Studies) with the module “Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences”
- Proof of German language competence
- APS certificate for applicants from China, India or Vietnam
Where documents are not in German or English, a certified translation into German or English is required. Proofs and the respective translations must be submitted online to uni-assist.
