Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Electrical Engineering and Information Technology

Electrical Engineering and Information Technology is one of the classic disciplines of engineering and lies at the heart  of almost all cutting-edge technologies and developments, whether it be electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, medical technology, robotics, computer chips, information technology or mobile phones. It focuses in particular on all applications involving electricity and its related physical effects. In addition, modern electrical engineering has extended its reach to cover a wide array of related fields.

The classic areas of concentration in electrical engineering are energy technology, electrical machines, automation and control engineering, telecommunications engineering and information theory, measurement technology, microwave and high-frequency engineering and electronics.

More about the course

Programme content

The Electrical Engineering and Information Technology course qualifies students for a scientific master's programme at a University as well as for professional fields in which the focus is on the design and development of complex, electrotechnical systems. These include systems from the fields of communication, control and automation, electronics and Medical Engineering, or embedded systems and information systems.
(Study/degree) programmes impart analytical, creative and design skills in the fundamental core subjects of Electrical Engineering. Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science modules form the basis of understanding.

Study objectives

Our students have mastered the fundamentals of Electrical Engineering and are able to explore specialised areas. They are familiar with Electrical Engineering materials and can use them professionally. They also design analogue and digital circuits and analyse signals and systems. They understand electromagnetic fields, apply Power Engineering and communications engineering concepts and develop microcomputers and embedded systems. Additional qualifications in business administration, communication and teamwork enable them to manage projects independently. In their bachelor's thesis, they demonstrate their ability to gather and evaluate information and formulate solutions.

Study situation

The ratio of teaching staff to students in the Engineering study/degree programmes at Ulm University is excellent. Exercise groups and tutorials are organised in small groups, the formation of learning groups is specifically encouraged and additional offers such as learning lounges and the use of electronic communication and learning platforms make it easier to get started in this diverse field of study. There is a trusting relationship between students, professors and teaching assistants. The commitment of both teaching staff and student tutors is high and focussed on the academic success of each individual student.

Programme structure

The Bachelor's degree programme in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology has a set timetable that allows more freedom of choice as the semesters progress.

The programme focuses on the basic subjects of Electrical Engineering, electronic components and circuits, signals and systems, electromagnetic fields and waves. These are supported by modules in Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science.
The subjects of energy, control, high-frequency, communications and microcomputer technology are studied in greater depth. Further specialised knowledge can be deepened in the compulsory elective area.

Particular emphasis is placed on teaching additional qualifications in the areas of English language, presentation techniques and team and communication skills.
With the bachelor's thesis, students demonstrate that they can work scientifically under supervision.

Occupational fields

The training; (akad.: ) education and skills of German Engineering enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide. This is why our graduates find excellent appointments at home and abroad.

Electrical Engineering and Information Technology engineers can be employed in all areas of Research and Development, project management, production optimisation, application and sales of modern technical systems: from energy supply and automation technology to information and communication technology systems and microelectronics and nanotechnology, in fields of application such as the automotive industry, mobile communications or Medical Engineering.

They are equally trained in the development of components ("hardware") and processes ("software").
