Brand and design guidelines at a glance

The 10 key rules for a consistent university identity

1. Name

Use Universität Ulm / Ulm University. The abbreviation Uni Ulm may also be used.

2. Logo

The Ulm University logo consists of a symbol and wordmark and must be used in accordance with the official logo guidelines. The standard version is black on a white background. The logo must not be altered or recreated. Use by external parties requires prior approval.

3. Brand values and slogan

Ulm University’s brand values – Excellent. Focused. Connected – guide its communication and public image. Communication materials should reflect at least one of these values. The university slogan is “Driven by science. Connected by people.” and should be used where it adds value and supports the message.

4. Logo hierarchy

Ulm University should always be clearly recognisable as the primary sender of a communication. The university logo must therefore appear on all official communication materials. Departmental, project or partner logos may be used in addition, but must not dominate the university logo.

5. Colours

The university’s visual identity is based on black, dark grey, light blue and white. Faculty colours may be used as accent colours.

6. Typography

Meta is the university’s corporate typeface and should be used for professionally designed communication materials. Fira is available for websites and as a licence-free alternative. Arial is used as the standard font for everyday office communication.

7. Images

Images should reflect the university’s brand values and present authentic situations from university life. Wherever possible, use original photography featuring real people from the university community. Copyright and licensing requirements must always be observed. AI-generated photographs may not be used in external communications.

8. Websites

Official university websites must follow the university’s corporate design and web standards. As a general rule, official websites should be hosted within the www.uni-ulm.de domain. Exceptions may apply to collaborative projects with external partners.

9. Social media

Official social media channels operated by faculties, institutes and other university units should clearly identify their connection to Ulm University. The university logo may only be used as a profile image on centrally managed university social media accounts.

10. Film and video

Filming and video recordings on campus require prior permission. Films and videos should reflect the university’s visual identity and tone of voice and should include the university logo where appropriate.
