Who is the degree programme for?
In the innovative Mathematical Biometry bachelor's programme, you will learn how to plan medical studies and evaluate real data. This requires in-depth mathematical and statistical knowledge from this degree programme. In specific cases, this knowledge will help you to select suitable procedures, both when conducting studies and when developing new medicines.
This degree programme suits you if you
- like mathematics and statistical thinking,
- are interested in biological and medical issues,
- want to analyse data and work with modern technologies,
- want to conduct research and solve problems in an interdisciplinary environment, for example in medical technology and pharmacology.
Structure of the study programme
In the Mathematical Biometry bachelor's programme, you will attend the basic mathematics lectures as well as additional courses in computer science, medicine and biology. Building on this, you will increasingly focus on statistical and especially biometric, i.e. bio-statistical, topics during the course of your Bachelor's degree programme.
You will learn
- fundamentals of mathematics, (bio)statistics, and life sciences,
- to work with statistical software such as R and SAS and a higher programming language,
- to apply mathematical and statistical methods to real medical data,
- to plan and analyse clinical studies,
- to put your knowledge into practice (consulting class, eight-week internship).
Teaching
We attach great importance to intensive support and an open learning atmosphere. This includes
- direct and personal contact with lecturers,
- tutorials and other accompanying formats for a successful start,
- a training camp to prepare you for your studies,
- individual counselling opportunities.
The close contact with the economy also enables participation in practical projects. And if your interests change, you can easily switch to other mathematical degree programmes.
The Mathematical Biometry programme at Ulm is characterised by the combination of thorough mathematical training with a focus on application in medical research. This concept is very successful: in recent years, our students' final theses have regularly been honoured with the Bernd Streitberg Prize of the German Region of the International Biometric Society.

Career prospects: Best career prospects
The growing economic importance of the healthcare sector and the small number of study programmes in biometry and biostatistics lead to excellent career opportunities for graduates of the mathematical biometry degree programme. This already applies after the Bachelor's degree: a typical job profile here is that of a so-called statistical programmer in a service company for the pharmaceutical industry. However, mathematical biometry graduates also work in the automotive industry, in marketing and wherever data is analysed.
The Bachelor's degree programme also opens up the possibility of studying for a Master's degree.
In addition, you can complete part of an actuarial training during your studies by acquiring DAV certificates (DAV-Scheine des Grundwissens). Career fairs and the WiMa Congress offer you valuable contacts for your career start.
