Ulm University Teaching Projects
It is our aim at Ulm University to support students in all phases of their studies - from their interest in studying to their graduation and transition to a career. A variety of measures is funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg as well as the federal government as part of various teaching projects.
Interest in and orientation towards studies
In the Virtual Taster Course (ViSchnu), high school students get an interactive insight into the contents and structure of the course of studies, as well as information on the study culture and working world. With the help of ViSchnu, prospective students can check whether their ideas and interests correspond to real study contents.

The Central Student Advisory Service offers events to help students find their choice of study. On the study information day, prospective students will get an overview of the study possibilities through subject introductions of the study courses and will gain an insight into various institutions of Ulm University.
Throughout the year, our advisors from the Central Student Advisory Office attend numerous information fairs where prospective students can contact us directly. From Munich via Stuttgart to Friedrichshafen, Ulm University is represented at fairs for prospective students and provides information about the range of courses and the contents of the study programs.

What is the procedure for studying? How are learning contents conveyed? What do the Ulm University premises look like in which the students spend their everyday study time? The trial lectures give prospective students the opportunity to experience this at first hand.

The Projekt EA-MINT BW (Suitability and Selection for MINT Courses in Baden-Württemberg) is a cooperation project of the Universities of Stuttgart and Ulm and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, funded by the MWK Baden-Württemberg. The project focuses on study choice orientation procedures for admission-free Bachelor's programs in the MINT subjects and paves the way for suitable selection procedures and entrance examinations.
Ulm University offers a general entry to study in the summer semester, which serves as a study orientation and preparation for undergraduate studies. During the orientation semester semester, students take part in subject-specific courses and examinations. Successfully passed exams can be credited in a later study course. Accompanying support measures, courses on organizing learning and individual study guidance help students to cope with the demands of university education and to make an informed choice of studies.
Initial study phase
Ulm University, the University of Applied Sciences Neu-Ulm and the Technical University of Ulm offer a preparatory semester for international prospective students who are interested in studying in German. It includes intensive linguistic as well as strategic and professional preparation for the course of study. You can find out more about the preparatory semester for international students here.
In order to make it easier for first-year students to get started and find their way around, they can familiarize themselves with the typical teaching and learning methods of the university at the training camp. Among other things, they train the handling of a large amount of material using mathematics and/or chemistry, since mathematical and chemical methods form the basis for many courses of study. This way, they strengthen their self-organization and train their study, learning and examination strategies by promoting their individual working techniques.
The Pre-Master's Course prepares international students for the study of natural science subjects at Ulm University. The aim of the program is to offer all students good starting opportunities for a successful study. In addition to the social aspects of studying in Germany, the focus is on important competences for laboratory work and on relevant contents that are a prerequisite for a successful Master's degree in natural sciences.
FUESE stands for interdisciplinary first semester introduction. The FUESE is a department of the student representation (StuVe) of Ulm University. The goal of FUESE is to make it easier for all first-year students at Ulm University to enter university. FUESE focuses on social life at Ulm University.
The departmental ESEs are the first-semester introductions of the student councils. This is where first-year students can get important information about studying and get to know their new fellow students. Links to the offers of the student councils can be found on the FUESE page of the StuVe.
With the project PASST! – Passgenau studieren in Ulm, funded by MWK Baden-Württemberg, Ulm University has been pursuing the goal of providing students in the introductory phase of their studies with tailor-made and individual support - tailored to the needs of their respective fields of study. The measures in the PASST! project are designed to promote and challenge. The small group offers with individual activation in chemistry, mathematics, physics and biology are particularly aimed at the goals of individual support, taking into account the learning and subject culture. By avoiding excessive or insufficient demands, the measure aims to motivate and counteract frustration.
The oftentimes theory-based and basic subjects at the beginning of their studies make it particularly difficult for many students to assess their significance for their studies and later professional life. This can have a negative impact on the motivation to study. The early study and vocational orientation offers in the MWK-supported project PASST! - Passgenau studieren in Ulm, the students confront realistic problems from professional practice in a playful way.
HELD-Motivation Training is an intervention program and supports first-year students in preparing for the everyday madness of studying. It starts right after the first performance feedback at the beginning of the course, as this motivates students to look for reasons for their performance, especially if they fail. The training has a preventive effect, because unexpected academic failure at the beginning of studies can lead to a "learned helplessness" on the part of the students - a feeling of loss of control in performance situations.

During your studies
The learning room is a learning area specifically for the students of the Department of Chemistry, which has been provided by the Study Commission for Chemistry. This is also where the student union library is located, to which every student has access as long as the study room is open. The learning room is usually opened when the university is in normal operation.
While the Central Student Advisory Service advises on the aspects of the transition from school to university, the range of courses on offer, the overall concept of the degree programs and on general questions concerning the core subjects, all faculties and institutes have student advisors for the individual degree programs.
The specialist counselling service provides advice on questions concerning the content of the subject (structure and content), the studybility of the subject, in the case of the Bachelor's and Master's programs also the selection of optional modules, the special features of the program (internships, mobile modules abroad etc.). The student advisory service is responsible for questions with a predominantly subject-specific reference.

The Central Student Advisory Service supports students in the transition period between school and university, as well as between studies and work, and in the difficult phases of their studies.

The aim of the UULM PRO MINT & MED project is to further improve teaching in the coming years. The study conditions are to be improved and, in particular, the entry into university to be facilitated. To this end, students and lecturers from all departments are offered numerous measures to improve teaching and study conditions.
Are you already tinkering with your own business idea during your studies? The Founder's Garage master's course offers interested students from various professional backgrounds the opportunity to conceptualize their own ideas and to develop an initial business model under the guidance of mentors from business and research. Students gain insights into the start-up scene and develop their project management skills.

Thesis and transition to the profession
In the lecture series Scientific Writing, students are taught a whole range of techniques and skills on the subject of scientific work and writing in one course. Knowledge in the areas of information research and information management as well as information technology and media technology is imparted.
This tutorial will introduce students to a full range of relevant resources, aids and tools to enable them to make informed choices in choosing the most appropriate means to use.
A further offer of the library's range of courses on the basics of scientific writing includes a seminar of 4 sessions of 2 hours each, which is designed to efficiently prepare students of the 3rd to 5th semester for scientific work such as term papers, seminar papers and bachelor theses.
The Ulm University Career Center offers students and companies a platform to find or provide current job offers. Students can find interesting internships and job offers, receive event tips based on their own profile or dates for recruiting events.
The Career Service offers an interface for students and companies. Students are thus offered a platform for the placement of jobs or internships. The Career Service also offers advice on all aspects of applications, business start-ups and scholarships. Furthermore, the Career Service organizes job and career fairs as well as events where interested students can get in touch with contacts from the corporate world. The SchreibBar is a weekly offer of the study pilots of biology. Students can come here every Wednesday between 12.00 and 14.00 and find advice on various topics of everyday academic life, talk to one of the study pilots, exchange ideas and advice with other students, or simply listen and drink coffee or eat your lunch snack.
