Mathematical Biometry
More about the course
Mathematical Biometry is an interdisciplinary degree programme that combines applied mathematics, computer science and life sciences. In the Bachelor's degree programme, you will take the basic mathematics lectures as well as supplementary courses in computer science, medicine and biology. In the further course of your studies, you will deepen your knowledge of statistics and biometry and learn to describe phenomena from the life sciences using mathematical models.

Who is the degree programme for?
In the innovative Mathematical Biometry bachelor's programme, you will learn how to plan medical studies and evaluate real data. This requires in-depth mathematical and statistical knowledge from this degree programme. In specific cases, this knowledge will help you to select suitable procedures, both when conducting studies and when developing new medicines.
This degree programme suits you if you
- like mathematics and statistical thinking,
- are interested in biological and medical issues,
- want to analyse data and work with modern technologies,
- want to conduct research and solve problems in an interdisciplinary environment, for example in medical technology and pharmacology.
Structure of the study programme
In the Mathematical Biometry bachelor's programme, you will attend the basic mathematics lectures as well as additional courses in computer science, medicine and biology. Building on this, you will increasingly focus on statistical and especially biometric, i.e. bio-statistical, topics during the course of your Bachelor's degree programme.
You will learn
- fundamentals of mathematics, (bio)statistics, and life sciences,
- to work with statistical software such as R and SAS and a higher programming language,
- to apply mathematical and statistical methods to real medical data,
- to plan and analyse clinical studies,
- to put your knowledge into practice (consulting class, eight-week internship).
Teaching
We attach great importance to intensive support and an open learning atmosphere. This includes
- direct and personal contact with lecturers,
- tutorials and other accompanying formats for a successful start,
- a training camp to prepare you for your studies,
- individual counselling opportunities.
The close contact with the economy also enables participation in practical projects. And if your interests change, you can easily switch to other mathematical degree programmes.
The Mathematical Biometry programme at Ulm is characterised by the combination of thorough mathematical training with a focus on application in medical research. This concept is very successful: in recent years, our students' final theses have regularly been honoured with the Bernd Streitberg Prize of the German Region of the International Biometric Society.

Why Ulm University?
The following characterises studying at Ulm University:
- Personal atmosphere: At Ulm University you don't study in an anonymous mass organisation. Overcrowded lecture halls or long waiting times for seminar places and theses? Not here with us. Instead, you benefit from a personalised learning environment that supports you individually and offers you the best conditions for your academic success.
- Wide range of degree programmes: The mathematics degree programme in Ulm is just as diverse as the faculty itself. Whether you are more interested in theoretical issues or prefer applied Mathematics - you can tailor your studies to your interests and set specific specialisations.
- Close contact and interdisciplinarity: The direct line to lecturers gives you an early insight into current research projects. At the same time, close cooperation with other disciplines and partners from industry promotes a practical and interdisciplinary education.
- Reinforced career prospects: Thanks to our wide-ranging network in science and business, you have the best prerequisites for a successful career start. Our graduates are in demand - among others at financial service providers, in software development, in tech start-ups and wherever data-based solutions are needed.
- International focus: Want to broaden your horizons? We offer you numerous opportunities to spend time abroad during your bachelor's degree. Students who study at our partner institutions via exchange programmes are exempt from tuition fees there.
Going abroad
A great way to broaden your horizons in a discipline is to study at a foreign university. Ulm University students can apply for one or two semesters abroad at numerous universities, both throughout Europe as part of the ERASMUS programme and outside Europe.
Internships and theses at other universities are also possible. Ulm University has exchange agreements with over 100 universities in 26 countries. Here are some impressions of our USA exchange programme.

What students and graduates of UUlm have to say
Angelika Böhm, Staburo GmbH Munich
The focus of the degree programme on statistics and life sciences gave me a very relaxed introduction to the working world, in which I now carry out and evaluate clinical studies as a statistical programmer/biostatistician. I was able to use my previous knowledge from my studies in a targeted manner right from the start. It also helped me to quickly find my feet in my everyday working life and take on responsibility.
We are graduates from different years of the Mathematical Biometry programme at Ulm University - we all now work at METRONOMIA - and can say that the programme prepared us excellently for our careers. The mixture of in-depth statistics, intensive programming practice, basic medical knowledge and practical insights into clinical studies made the start in the industry very easy. The manageable size of the cohorts was particularly great: you had direct access to the professors and could rely on their support at all times. As a small, closely networked group at Ulm University, we experienced cohesion early on - this togetherness still characterises us today and now also reinforces our work in the team at METRONOMIA. Understanding theory, applying it in projects and developing viable solutions together - this is exactly how we organise our day-to-day work today. The Mathematical Biometry degree programme at Ulm University provides the ideal foundation for this.
Dr Regina Stegherr, Charité Berlin
The Mathematical Biometry degree programme combines Mathematics, Statistics and Life Sciences in a varied way. The knowledge I acquired during my studies, especially in programming statistical software, and the many real-life examples of data analyses have prepared me perfectly for my professional life. The manageable number of students ensures a pleasant atmosphere and good cohesion across the year groups.
Svenja Labuhn, DATAMAP GmbH Freiburg
The degree programme not only provides theoretical, in-depth knowledge in Mathematics and Statistics, but also teaches how to practically analyse medical data and programme models. The flat hierarchy between students and lecturers promotes an open learning atmosphere in which students are encouraged to ask questions and actively shape the teaching. Targeted additional programmes make the transition to professional life noticeably easier, as you make contacts and gain practical experience at an early stage.

Career prospects: Best career prospects
The growing economic importance of the healthcare sector and the small number of study programmes in biometry and biostatistics lead to excellent career opportunities for graduates of the mathematical biometry degree programme. This already applies after the Bachelor's degree: a typical job profile here is that of a so-called statistical programmer in a service company for the pharmaceutical industry. However, mathematical biometry graduates also work in the automotive industry, in marketing and wherever data is analysed.
The Bachelor's degree programme also opens up the possibility of studying for a Master's degree.
In addition, you can complete part of an actuarial training during your studies by acquiring DAV certificates (DAV-Scheine des Grundwissens). Career fairs and the WiMa Congress offer you valuable contacts for your career start.
Dr. Frank Fleischer, Global Head Therapeutic Area and Methodology Statistics, Boehringer Ingelheim
Statistical aspects play a central role in clinical research at Boehringer Ingelheim, be it in the planning of clinical studies, interpreting complex data, or communicating scientific results. Studying Mathematical Biometry at the University of Ulm provides an excellent foundation in these areas.
Graduates have an excellent education in mathematical statistics, clinical methodology, and data analysis practice. Exactly these skills are essential for biostatistics and data science in a research-based pharmaceutical company. Particularly valuable is the ability not only to apply statistical concepts methodologically correctly, but also to communicate them clearly in an interdisciplinary context, for example to medical colleagues or regulatory partners.
The practical orientation of the program, the integration of modern software tools, and the international orientation of the students make the students of Mathematical Biometry at Ulm University an important source of future talent in our field.
