Number allocation
History
Until our current telephone system was commissioned, the University’s number range was 0731-176, whilst the hospital’s was 0731-179. In 1991, the new joint telephone system was introduced, and the 0731-502 range, with 4-digit extension numbers, became the shared number range for the University, the University Hospital, as well as the University of Applied Sciences, the Student Services Organisation and the Building Authority.
By the end of the 1990s, the 502 range had largely been exhausted, so the 0731-503 number range was added. As a result, internal extensions now consisted of five digits, with a ‘2’ or ‘3’ prefix. A few years later, the University was separated from the Hospital, and the Hospital was allocated its own number range, 0731-500. Finally, at the start of 2005, the FAW’s 0731-501 number range was transferred to the University.
Internal system connections
The extensions on our telephone system are numbered with 5 digits, and each number is unique within the network. This means it makes no difference to the user whether the extension they are dialling is assigned to the University or the hospital. In all cases, the desired extension can be dialled internally using the 5-digit number free of charge.
In most cases, it is not possible to tell from an extension number whether it is assigned to the University or the University Hospital. This is only possible for a few departments. In these cases, the first digit of the number is decisive:
0 – External access code
1 – Ulm
University 2 – Ulm
University 3 – Ulm
University 4 – Ulm University Hospital
5 – Ulm University Hospital
6 – Ulm University Hospital
7 – System numbers
8 – System
numbers 9 – System numbers
Accessibility from outside
All numbers between 0731-50-00000 and 0731-50-39999 are now routed through our telephone system. The switchboard can be reached from outside as follows:
0731-50-10 University
When dialling University extensions from outside, the first point of the extension number is omitted and the appropriate number block (0731-502 or 0731-503) is selected instead. However, to make this clearer for the caller, the format
0731.50-abcde University extensions
is used here. For university extensions, the first point can only be 1, 2 or 3.
Internally, the switchboard can be reached via the following number:
- 99 (University)
Emergency numbers
The following emergency numbers can be dialled from all telephones:
Police 0-110 or 110
Fire service 0-112 or 112
Ambulance control centre 0-112 or 112
Special connections
DECT telephones
The extension numbers for cordless telephones on the University’s DECT network are fully integrated into the numbering range for corded telephones and are therefore also 5 digits long.
IP telephones
Like DECT telephones, IP telephones with 5-digit extensions are integrated into the standard numbering scheme.
Preferred numbers and number portability when moving offices
Preferred numbers are generally not available for conventional extensions. When assigning new extension numbers, care is taken to ensure that, where possible, these are within the same number block as the other lines in the relevant department. If this is not possible – for example, because the range is already fully allocated – a different number suitable for the respective sub-system will be assigned.
When relocating, the telephone number can be retained provided that the institute or facility is not changed and the move takes place within the buildings managed by Ulm University.
