Linux Command Line and Bash Shell Scripting for the Use on High Performance Compute Clusters
The bwHPC project[1] of the state Baden-Württemberg offers access to High Performance Computing resources to its universities, of which the kiz operates the research compute-cluster "Justus"[2].
This introductory course will explain software tools in use on these compute clusters on

After the course, you should be able to:
- use the Linux system documentation (man, info, help)
- cope with special characters in filenames (quoting)
- set shell variables and use them
- copy, read and write files and be able to find them using some search criteria
- find the ID of specific running programs and kill them
- write simple for-loops in bash
- extract lines from a file using keywords and plot numerical values from those lines
Members of Ulm University can learn most of the needed shell basics via online course material on lynda.com[3], which covers a similar range of topics.
