Change of virus protection from G-Data to Microsoft Defender

What is changing?

The virus protection solution G-Data Endpoint Protection Business used to date will be replaced by Microsoft Defender.

The existing contract with G-Data expires on 23 March 2026.

Why is the change taking place?

Microsoft Defender is already integrated in Windows 10/11 and activates automatically as soon as no additional antivirus software is installed. It offers comprehensive protection (AV test) and integrates seamlessly into the Microsoft environment - third-party products are therefore no longer required.

Which devices are affected?

All devices on which the G-Data virus scanner provided by Ulm University is installed are affected and must be adapted.

What does this mean for you?

  • Devices managed centrally by kiz
    The changeover from G-Data to Microsoft Defender has already been carried out by kiz.
     
  • Self-administered service devices
    Devices that are not managed by the kiz must be adapted manually.
    • Uninstall G-Data (uninstalling or removing apps and programmes in Windows)
    • Uninstalling G-Data automatically activates the already integrated Microsoft Defender. This provides sufficient basic protection for your systems. For improved protection, kiz (Communication and Information Centre) provides end users with a configuration script in the software portal with default settings recommended by us. Regardless of whether you use these additional settings or not, you should familiarise yourself with the Microsoft Defender options and check the settings regularly.
    • Additional options for IT contact persons: If you are responsible for a larger range of Windows devices and would like regular reports for these devices, we offer to include these areas in our Defender portal. You can find more information on this in the software portal.

When will the changeover take place?

The systems can be converted immediately, but no later than 23 March 2026, after which time protection via G-Data is no longer guaranteed.
